HYDE Conservative Club faces a scrap to hold on to their Stalybridge Snooker League title after losing a top of the table clash. However, they could be thanking their friends from Denton after a vital win left them in front.
The margins between them and St Peter’s could not be closer as it took a respotted black ball in the final doubles match to separate them.
After the snooker and billiards singles matches were shared, it was down to Alec Tate to sink the crucial ball to give St Peter’s the win.
That meant both sides were locked on 29 points but by the end of 2019, the defending champions found themselves pout in front.
And Denton Conservative Club’s 4-1 win over St Peter’s in the final match of the year while Hyde Conservative Club defeated Staly Labour by the same margin may prove crucial.
It also threw Denton into the mix for the title because as the year ended, they found themselves in second place on 31 points, only five behind their Hyde counterparts, who took advantage of St Peters’ free week by beating Mossley ‘B’ 3-2, and one ahead of St Peter’s, who have a game in hand.
In the whist league, Mossley ‘B’ ended 2019 on top with 14 pts but a trio of teams – Denton Con Club, Hyde Club and St Peter’s – are snapping at their heels.
Stalybridge Snooker League is also celebrating after picking up its first sponsor.
The whist league and Taylor Cup are now sponsored by The Lions Bar 91 of Stalybridge.
