CUSTOMERS in Hattersley have been dealt the shock news that all counters at the Tesco Extra store are to close.
The firm has been considering the future of a number of departments as it looks to cut costs.
And the store on Stockport Road will feel the full brunt as its fish, meat and hot and cold deli counters will be shut completely.
The news has come as somewhat of a surprise as the store is Tesco’s largest in the Tameside area since it opened in July 2012.
It provided more than 300 jobs – now Tesco appears to be feeling the financial pinch.
Other stores in the area are also being affected, with the supermarkets in Stalybridge and Greenfield in Saddleworth seeing its fish, meat and hot delicatessen counters operating on a part-time basis.
Stalybridge’s cold deli counter will close completely.
Tesco says it is making the decision as customers have less time available to shop too, meaning they are using counters less frequently.
Staff caught up in the changes will be helped out, with redeployment opportunities wherever possible being offered.
And the closure or part closure of counters will not reduce the range of products available to shoppers.
A Tesco spokesman said: “Following a recent review we are making changes to the counters offer at a number of stores.
“We have been communicating the changes within each store to customers and have been supporting those colleagues affected.”
